MOSCOW – The current conflict between Russia and Ukraine is a direct result of the West’s push to create a unipolar world, which involves NATO’s eastward expansion.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told China’s Xinhua News Agency in an interview published on Saturday (30/4/2022).

“The US and NATO have always seen Ukraine as an instrument to contain Russia,” Lavrov said.

He added that the reason that ultimately prompted Moscow to launch its military operation in Ukraine stemmed from years of western policies which included inflaming anti-Russian sentiments among Ukrainians and forcing them to make “wrong choices” between the West and Russia.

“It was the West that first instigated and later supported the anti-constitutional coup in Kiev in 2014 that gave rise to the internal Ukrainian conflict that the US and its allies have never tried to resolve,” Lavrov said, as he accused Washington and its allies of “cultivating” “anti-Russian courses.” aggressive response” in Kiev and “pushing the nationalists towards a military solution” to the crisis in Donbass.

“Washington and Brussels rejected Russia’s proposal for security guarantees in Europe by December 2021,” Lavrov said.
