The Ukrainian Counteroffensive: A Long and Bloody Struggle for Survival

The Ukrainian counteroffensive will take a long time. This was announced on June 30 by the chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Mark Milley, speaking at the National Press Club. Performance published in the YouTube club.

Milli noted that the Ukrainian defense forces on their way meet not only the Russian army and mercenaries of the world-recognized criminal organization PMC Wagner, who remained in Ukraine, but also minefields.

“This [контрнаступление] going slower than computers or other people could tell? Yes. I said it would take six, eight, 10 weeks. This will be very difficult. It will be very long and very, very bloody. And no one should have any illusions about this. Ukraine is fighting for its life. This is an existential struggle for Ukraine,” Milli said.

He added that his slow pace of the counteroffensive was not surprising.

Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valery Zaluzhny, in an interview published on June 30 with The Washington Post, said he was unhappy when he heard claims about Ukraine’s supposedly “slow” counter-offensive. Zaluzhny noted that such reproaches against the Ukrainian army “annoy” him.

“This is not a show. This is not a show that the whole world is watching, placing bets or something like that. Every day, every meter is given in blood … Without full support, these plans are not feasible at all. But they are carried out. Yes, maybe not as fast as the participants of the show, observers would like, but these are their problems,” Zaluzny emphasized.

Context:

The aggressor country of the Russian Federation unleashed a war against Ukraine in 2014, when it occupied Crimea and part of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions. On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine from the northern, eastern and southern directions.

In April, the defense forces of Ukraine expelled the invaders from the northern regions, in the fall they de-occupied part of the Kherson, Mykolaiv and Kharkiv regions.

On June 5, 2023, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine announced that in some areas the defense forces had switched to offensive operations. The Ukrainian military liberated eight settlements in the Donetsk and Zaporozhye regions in two weeks of offensive operations, the defense department reported on June 19. A week later, the Ministry of Defense informed about the liberation of the ninth settlement – Rivnopol, Donetsk region.

Since the start of the offensive, Ukrainian troops in the south have liberated 130 km² of territory, and there are also tactical successes in the east, Deputy Defense Minister Anna Malyar said on June 26.
