Since the start of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, the State Criminal Police Office in Hesse has known of cases in the mid-single digits in which the Z symbol was apparently used as a political symbol. This is in particular damage to property, said the Ministry of the Interior in Wiesbaden. The criminal police are investigating the cases. “There are no indications of the perpetrator at the present time,” explained the Ministry of the Interior.
Since the beginning of the war of aggression, a white “Z” has often been seen on Russian tanks and uniforms. The sign has become a symbol of support for Russia, and it is also displayed outside the war zone on buildings, cars and clothing to express support for Russia’s attack.
“The sole use of the last letter of our alphabet is of course not punishable,” explained the Ministry of the Interior. From the point of view of the state government, however, it is undisputed that public use of the letter Z to underline propaganda support for the Russian war of aggression, which violates international law, cannot be tacitly accepted.
