The Ukraine War: A Devastating Toll on Lives Lost and Wounded

Since it began 18 months ago, the Ukraine war has claimed almost half a million lives and wounded on the Russian and Ukrainian sides. This number was given by officials in the American Biden administration, according to the New York Times. However, they pointed out that it is an estimate as Moscow always downplays its losses and Kiev does not publish any numbers at all.

Nevertheless, available information pointed to an intensified escalation of the fighting in eastern Ukraine and thus to a steadily increasing number of casualties during the Ukrainian counter-offensive, which has been going on for almost three months.

Russia’s losses are said to amount to approximately 120,000 dead and 170,000 to 180,000 injured.

The Ukraine mourns almost 70,000 dead and 100,000 to 120,000 injured.

Although Russian numbers far exceed Ukraine’s, observers point out that Russia’s armed forces are almost three times larger than Ukraine’s. In addition, because of the much larger population, Russia can refresh the ranks of the army faster and more extensively.
