The UK today recorded its largest daily increase in new cases of coronavirus since 19 February. Government figures show that 11,007 new infections have been detected in the kingdom in the past 24 hours, compared to 9055 a day earlier, Reuters reported.
Today, 19 people were reported dead with a positive test done 28 days earlier, compared to nine yesterday. This is also the largest daily increase since May 11 so far. The total number of deaths diagnosed with COVID-19 on the same parameter amounted to 127,945.
In terms of the absolute number of deaths due to the infection, Great Britain ranks first in Europe. But per capita, the situation in Italy and much of Eastern Europe is worse in this regard, BTA explained.
The spread across the United Kingdom of the Delta strain, which was first isolated in India, prompted Prime Minister Boris Johnson to announce on Monday that he was postponing the planned June 21 easing of the physical distance requirement.
