The UK plans to change immigration rules to hire more foreign staff

British Prime Minister Liz Truss is reportedly planning to expand immigration to fill vacant UK jobs in order to spur economic growth. In this way Truss wants to increase the number of foreign workers who can enter and work in the UK.

Some government sources have assured that the government will raise the ceiling on seasonal agricultural workers and broadband engineers, as well as make some changes to the list of low jobs, which will allow key sectors of the economy to hire more foreign staff. Truss is interested in recruiting broadband engineers to reach the goal of 85% of UK homes with the Internet by 2025.

Another suggestion to make this measure possible is the easing of the English language requirement in some sectors, which would benefit more foreign workers in accessing job opportunities.

It is important to note that, according to the Sunday Times, this proposal is not well received by Brexit supporters in the cabinet, such as Interior Minister Suella Braverman and Secretary of Commerce Kemi Badenoch. A Conservative MP said new Conservative voters will be unnerved by the prospect of easing immigration rules.

The UK currently has an unemployment rate of 3.6%. According to the National Statistical Office, there are 1.26 million job vacancies. This is how the social services sector needs 105,000 employees, nursing needs 40,000 people, and the transport sector needs 100,000.

Foreign Minister Kwasi Kwarteng announced on Friday 23 September that a new plan will be released in the coming weeks “to ensure that the immigration system supports growth while maintaining control.”
