The U.S. Supreme Court Ruling Unravels Decades-Old University Admissions Tradition

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that it is unconstitutional for a university to include the race of applicants in its selection criteria. American higher education is entering a new era as decades of tradition are being unwound.

The verdict was 6-3, split between conservatives and liberals. Harvard University and the University of North Carolina’s selection programs violate the constitution’s guarantee of equal rights. Chief Justice Roberts, in his ruling, dismissed the two schools’ arguments to ensure diversity.

“The programs at both schools lack sufficient focus and measurable goals to justify considering race, and inevitably use race negatively, involve racial stereotypes, and We are missing a meaningful destination,” Roberts said. “We have never accepted a selection program in this manner and will continue to do so,” he continued.

The ruling could reduce the number of black and Hispanic students at top U.S. schools, prompting many universities to rethink their selection criteria.

Justices Sotomayor, Kagan and Jackson dissented from the verdict. Judge Sotomayor read out the summary of the dissenting opinion, saying, “Today, the Supreme Court overturned a decades-old precedent and imposed superficial racist rules on the United States.” “The devastating impact of this decision cannot be overstated,” he reasoned.
