At least 50 people have died in a severe hurricane in the southeastern U.S. state of Kentucky, Governor Andy Beshir told reporters.
He said certain areas in the state had been destroyed, with wind speeds of almost 90 meters per second.
The governor acknowledged that the number of people killed in the storm is likely to rise to 70-100. It is “the strongest hurricane in Kentucky’s history,” he added.
A storm-breaking storm factory roof in Mayfield caused a large number of casualties, the Democrat said. “I declared a state of emergency before midnight,” Beshire said. Several buildings in Kentucky have collapsed in a storm.
The storms have caused chaos in many parts of the United States. A storm in the state of Illinois on Friday destroyed a large warehouse at Amazon online store, officials said, but local media reported that about 100 workers were trapped in the building, a third of which was destroyed.
There was a storm warning in the area where the warehouse staff processed customer orders at night.
In Arkansas, one person was killed and 20 more were trapped when a hurricane hit Monette Manor, U.S. media reported. Rescuers managed to free all the trapped people.
