The U.S. prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into Trump over secret documents

The grand jury will focus on the findings of the US National Archives from January this year, according to which Trump took 15 boxes of materials to his Florida resort Mar-a-Lago at the end of his term, including government documents, souvenirs and gifts from foreign leaders or letters.

Among them were items marked as secret.

According to an anonymous NYT source, the subject of the investigation is the way in which the documents got from Washington to Florida, who packed them or how they were kept at Trump’s resort.

It also finds out who knew about the removal of classified material from the White House.

Allegations are rarely made when investigating the handling of classified documents, the NYT notes.

However, the Department of Justice usually directs them to determine whether certain sensitive information may have been disclosed and, if so, to allow intelligence services to take measures to protect resources or procedures.

The then presidential candidate Hillary Clinton also faced a similar investigation in 2016 due to her electronic correspondence, and the pre-election affair eventually went without her prosecution.

The investigation into the handling of classified material is another of a number of legal issues Trump faces 15 months after leaving office.

The ex-president’s Atlanta prosecutor’s office is investigating whether he tried to influence the results of last year’s presidential election in the state of Georgia.

A former president in New York State is facing another investigation, this time on suspicion of tax and other financial fraud in his company.
