A Tyrannosaurus Rex skull could fetch up to $ 20 million at a New York auction.
Auction house Sotheby’s announced Tuesday that it was one of the most complete skull bone sets ever discovered. The approximately 76-million-year-old skull, nicknamed “Maximus”, was discovered on private property in the US state of South Dakota.
It is around two meters tall and weighs around 90 kilograms. The auction is scheduled for December 9th. A Gorgosaurus skeleton sold at auction for about $ 6 million in New York last summer, shortly before a skeleton of the dinosaur species Deinonychus antirrhopus sold for about $ 12 million. In 2020, a Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton earned more than $ 30 million. However, many experts are critical of the scientifically valuable skeleton auction.
