For several years there have been intensive efforts to set up a left-turn lane on Bundesstrae 26 near Gambach for vehicles coming from Gemnden to Gambach. So far the situation has only been defused by speed limits, previously to 80, for some time to 70 kilometers per hour. There was no land for the construction of a turning lane. Now the city has come to an agreement with Deutsche Bahn as the owner.
In a press release, the Karlstadt city administration announces the success of the years of efforts: “The efforts to achieve this land acquisition have been intensified by the city of Karlstadt in recent years and now led to a positive result at the end of 2020. The State Building Authority Wrzburg shared informed the city of Karlstadt in January 2021 that a corresponding agreement was signed with Deutsche Bahn and the way is now clear for implementation in the coming years. “
Agreement concluded
So that there is no misunderstanding: The railway does not sell the property, but a license agreement is concluded, explains Julia Sauer, who is responsible for the State Building Authority for Main-Spessart. It is about several corridor sections with a total of 260 square meters that will remain the property of the railway but may be used for the construction of the road.
Again and again there were accidents at the junction, including seriously injured people, or near-accidents. The plans for the turning lane are ready in the drawer. “A few years ago, the state building authority commissioned an engineering firm to plan this intersection area,” says the city’s announcement. This should be checked as soon as possible. Then there will be a cost estimate, said Sauer. The construction costs will be divided between the federal government and the district: two thirds will be borne by the federal government and one third by the district, because the district will be involved in the confluence of the district road to Gambach.

Signatures for a breakpoint
Martha Bolkart-Mhlrath, city councilor and second mayor from Gambach, says: “I am happy for all Gambach residents and for everyone who turns here.” The success is due to the tenacity of all those involved. She found a newspaper clipping in which construction supervisor Bernd Aldenhoff from the road construction department announced in 2007 in the Karlstadt city council that the turning lane would be built in 2009. She has known about the current success for a few days. Mayor Michael Hombach, however, did not want anything to reach the public until the matter was in the dust.
Until then, the people of Gambach should keep their feet still on their other concern: the connection between the village and the cycle path and the Main. The Gambachers are now trying to link this to another topic. You have started a signature campaign with the aim that there should be another train stop in Gambach. That would require an underpass under the train tracks. And with that two goals would be achieved at once.
There used to be a barrier at Gambach train station that was operated from the train station. The station was closed in 1991 and demolished in 1994. The passenger numbers were too low, the railway justified the step at the time.
