The Turbulent Friendship Between Tupac and Biggie: Robbery, Betrayal, and the East-West Coast Rap Feud

On November 30, 1994, Tupac was called to Quad Studios in New York to record a party with rapper Little Shawn, and that’s when their friendship soured.

When Tupac arrived at the studio, he was robbed and shot five times. It is believed that Biggie knew about the attack and also who was behind it, but Biggie did not reveal this information to him.

Despite Tupac’s claims, Biggie maintained that he had been a loyal friend. “Honestly, I had no problem with [Tupaku],” Biggie previously said. “I saw what was going on and I tried [Tupaku] teach I was there when he bought his first Rolex, but I wasn’t close to being able to do it myself. I think Tupac felt better with guys who had as much money as him.”

However, Tupac’s suspicions only increased when Biggie released “Who Shot Ya?” a month after the incident. Biggie claimed he wrote the song “before Tupac was shot,” but the rapper took it as a confession from Biggie.

In October 1995, Tupac signed a contract with Suge Knight’s Death Row Records and received a $1.4 million security deposit from the record company in exchange. The move also put him at the center of an East-West Coast rap label dispute against Biggie’s Bad Boy Records. Later, Tupac responded to Biggie’s song with several hits – “Hit ‘Em Up”, “Against All Odds” and “Bomb First (My Second Reply).
