“The Truth Behind Venice’s Green Canal and Potential Climate Protest”

The green water in Venice’s famous Grand Canal is not dangerous, reports Governor Luca Zaia of the Veneto region. The water at the Rialto Bridge suddenly turned fluorescent green on Sunday. A police investigation was then launched.

According to researchers, the bright green color is caused by a biological dye that is used in water inspections and research in caves, among other things. It is not yet known who added the dye to the water.

The police are investigating whether it may be a climate protest, the local newspaper writes The New Venice. Governor Zaia disapproves of Venice becoming a “stage for activism,” he said on Twitter.

Earlier this month, an environmental group colored the water in Rome’s famous Trevi Fountain black in protest against fossil fuels. They did that with charcoal.

It is not the first time that the Grand Canal turns green. This happened for the first time in 1968, during the Biennale exhibition. That was done by the Argentinian artist Nicolás García Uriburu. With his action he drew attention to ecological awareness.
