The Truth About Menopause and Early Menstruation: Debunking the Myth

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Deputy Chair of the Greater Jakarta Branch of the Indonesian Menopause Association, Dr. Ni Komang Yeni Dhana Sari, Sp.OG, said that women whose first menstruation is earlier does not mean they experience menopause sooner than those whose first menstruation is later.

“It’s a myth that if menstruation is fast, menopause is faster,” said the doctor who graduated from the University of Indonesia in a webinar with media crew, Tuesday.

Yeni explained that when women are born they already carry their own number of follicles or egg cells and this number varies from one woman to another, some have 500,000, 750,000 or 1,000,000 follicles. Each month, one follicle will come out during menstruation.

Therefore, he emphasized that the time of the first menstruation does not determine whether a woman will experience menopause sooner or later.

“If she carries a large number of follicles, she will menopause later than those born with fewer follicles,” said Yeni.

Menopause is the natural end of the menstrual cycle which usually occurs when a woman reaches the age of 45 to 55 years. Menopause is said to occur early if it occurs under the age of 40 years. According to Yeni, actually early menopause is very, very rare.

However, he continued, lifestyles such as lack of rest, excessive stress, minimal exercise, poor food supplementation, smoking habits and consuming alcoholic drinks, can speed up menopause.

“There may also be certain diseases such as cancer, therapy or drugs for cancer can kill the ovaries, causing premature menopause,” said Yeni.

He added that women under the age of 35 years or 40 years generally have estrogen levels within normal or sufficient limits. They should also menstruate regularly. Causes of irregular menstruation include disorders, including being overweight, consuming bad food, not doing exercise.

Yeni said there was no relationship between irregular menstruation and menopause.

“There is no connection with menopause. Unless the lifestyle is not good, menstruation is irregular, then it is not treated. So you don’t continue to menstruate,” he said.
