The Truth About Fees in Soviet Cinema: Actor Vasily Livanov Speaks Out

The artist spoke honestly about his attitude towards fees.

Modern viewers often cite the example of cinema from the times of the USSR. Russians believe that in that era there were many more talented artists, which provided an abundance of masterpiece paintings. Many believe that Soviet stars worked not for the sake of fees, but out of love for art and thought first of all about the audience. That’s why they produced brilliant images on the screen.

However, film veterans ruthlessly debunk this myth. The famous actor Vasily Livanov admitted that in the USSR, fees for roles were of great importance. Moreover, honored and national artists could claim a very high rate.

“At any time, an actor cares how much he gets paid. The fee depends on how he performs on set, how much he has already worked in films and what impression he makes,” – the artist explained.

He added that he received about 500-700 rubles per day of filming in the series of films about Sherlock Holmes. It was very good money.
