The Truth About Exercising on an Empty Stomach and Weight Loss

We all know that exercise is good for you. But there are many stories and claims about sports that are not all equally accurate. For example, you would burn more fat – and therefore lose weight faster – if you exercise on an empty stomach. Is it smart to schedule your workout session before breakfast? Or is it really better to take some concentrates first? We explain how it works.

This is how losing weight works

Losing weight works like this: do you burn more calories than you take in? Then you fall off. You can create this difference in calories by increasing your calorie consumption – more exercise – or getting fewer calories – making smarter food choices (don’t eat less). For many people it works most efficiently to choose a combination of these methods. You can find more tips for healthy weight loss here.

Does the time of exercise matter?

The moment at which you burn these calories, on the other hand, does not matter at all. In the morning – before you eat something – your body uses fat reserves to get energy from it. At this moment you immediately burn fats. Do you exercise later in the day? Then your body first uses the energy from the food you received that day. This makes it sound like you use more fats by exercising on an empty stomach. But later in the day you just fill it up again. Do you eat your meal after exercise? Your body then only needs energy for the basic body processes (such as breathing, growth, digestion and heartbeat). The remaining energy is then stored as fat. So you use more fat when you exercise on an empty stomach, but later in the day you also store more fat. All in all, it doesn’t matter when you exercise.

With or without breakfast before exercising?

One can handle sports on an empty stomach, but the other really needs a (light) breakfast first. You can use the energy from food to get the most out of your workout. This can ensure that you can try just a little harder. Of course, this also depends on the workout you have planned. If you do a yoga flow or a short, easy run, you can keep this up without breakfast. But do you exercise more intensively or for longer than half an hour? In that case, it is smart to eat something before exercising. But again, this varies from person to person. Do what feels best for you. You can experiment with breakfast before or just after exercising. This way you experience how you can get the most out of your sports moment.
