The doctor explained how a cold can be cured and who should not take certain medications.
There is no cure for the common cold, so most of the drugs used to treat it are useless, warned John Mafi, an associate professor at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, internist. His opinion leads Lenta.ru with reference to the publication Very Well Health.
Mafi said that colds cannot be cured with medications, you can only alleviate the symptoms: reduce the temperature, eliminate headaches, runny nose or nasal congestion. Many medications to combat symptoms can be purchased without a prescription, the doctor noted, but, in his opinion, it is better to consult a specialist and get professional advice. “For example, I would never advise older patients to treat their fever with ibuprofen, as it is harmful for heart and kidney disease,” Mafi explained.
The therapist added that cold symptoms can be alleviated not only with medications, but also with non-pharmacological treatments. So, according to Mefi, humidifiers will help cope with nasal congestion, honey will reduce a sore throat, and the most useful remedies against colds are rest and sleep.
