Party mules: who has never been guilty of it? When people are drinking, kisses are more likely to happen – and you may not always share that kiss with someone who would usually be your type. But that’s not because others look prettier when you’ve had one too many. A new study claims that this widely used excuse is not very true.
You may know it. While going out, you get talking to another partygoer. There is laughter, flirting and one thing leads to another. When you look back on your drunken kiss that day, it’s hard to ignore it: your kissing partner is not your type at all. The only explanation for the kiss you can think of is too much alcohol. In English, this phenomenon is called ‘beer goggles’: the phenomenon in which you think others are prettier when you drink too much.
But a Stanford University study, published in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs, now argues that that excuse has little use for it. The scientists conducted tests on 18 young male couples. There was no evidence that the male participants began to doubt how attractive they found someone while intoxicated.
“Liquid Courage”
The researchers gave the men the choice to approach people. They gave them three full alcoholic drinks in just over thirty minutes. What turned out? The men did not necessarily suddenly start approaching people they found less attractive. On the contrary, once they had finished their drinks, they wanted to interact more quickly with people they found attractive.
“Conventional wisdom suggests that alcohol leads people to perceive others as more physically attractive,” Professor Molly Bowdring, author of the study, tells The Post. However, she found no evidence of this. There are indications, however, that there is such a thing as ‘liquid courage’. The men would gain more self-confidence through drinking, which would make them more likely to approach people they find attractive.
Bowdring emphasizes that this study is very colored by age and gender. After all, the study was only conducted on young men around the age of twenty.
