With seven awards received for 14 nominations, the German production of Netflix is the big winner of the 76th ceremony of the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA)
Directed by the German Edward Berger, the new film adaptation ofIn the west, nothing is new walks away with seven awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Available on Netflix since October 2022, the war film defied predictions by beating the favorites Everything Everywhere All At Once et The Banshees of Inisherin. Nominated 14 times during the evening, the film equals Tiger and Dragon (2000) by Ang Lee, the only film so far to receive so many nominations for a foreign language film.
In the west, nothing is new tells the story of the First World War through the eyes of Paul Bäumer, an idealistic 17-year-old soldier confronted with the horror of the trenches. Written in 1929, thee novel by Erich Maria Remarque became a symbol of German pacifism, even causing its author to flee, hunted down by the Nazis for his ideas. This spectacular new adaptation, available only on Netflix in France, has been praised for the quality of its staging and the current resonance of its subject. “War is anything but an adventure” underlines Malte Grunert, producer of the film.
Cate Blanchett and Austin Butler crowned
With her remarkable interpretation of a conductor in Tar by Todd Field, Cate Blanchett leaves with the award for best actress. Same prestige for Austin Butler, crowned best actor for his role as Elvis in the eponymous film by Baz Luhrmann. The Banshees of Inisherin by Martin McDonagh, one of the favorites of the evening, won four awards, including Best British Film.
