Dimitar Kanchev had another side –
he wanted to show his well-maintained
body and had expectations that he was right
The triple murderer from “Geo Milev” once again escaped freedom. The Sofia Court of Appeals again refused to release him on parole. The reason – he was not fully aware of the damage he had caused. The decision of the three-member court panel is from December 29 and is final. So Dimitar Kanchev
welcomed
the next one
new Year
behind bars
He has been in the Kazichene prison dormitory since June 17, 2017 for good behavior.
There he served the remainder of 2 and a half years of the 16-year sentence given for the murder of his father – the gunsmith Nikolai Kanchev, his stepmother Miglena and 4-year-old brother, also Nikolai. The three were found dead in the family penthouse in Sofia’s Geo Milev district on March 2, 1997. The teenage son was detained the day after the triple murder because he was with friends.
After the arrest, the 18-year-old then confessed. He later denied claiming to be under the influence of diazepam.
Kanchev went to prison in late May 2013 after a 16-year court saga, during which time the case reached the Supreme Court of Cassation four times.
This is not the first time he wants to be released. He did the same in January 2020, but the Sofia Court of Appeals again denied him, arguing that he was not fully aware of his guilt. Kanchev denies having committed the crime.
On November 18 last year, Judge Miroslava Todorova of the Sofia City Court (SCC) agreed to release her. She referred to a psychological expertise made by experts outside the prison. According to them, Kanchev could control and respect the rights of others. They also criticized the work of social workers in prison, which, however, met with disapproval from appeals judges. According to them, experts are far-reaching assessments of work they do not know.
The prosecutor’s office, social inspectors and the head of the prison were against Kanchev’s release.
In their decision, the appellate magistrates admitted that during his stay behind bars Kanchev treated the administration with the necessary respect. He had a balanced behavior, avoided conflicts, strived to show good behavior, worked, participated in cultural and sporting events, was not punished, but rewarded many times.
“But he accepts part of the responsibility for the crime and believes the sentence has been increased,” the judges said. According to them, he was not aware of the motives for his criminal behavior. He also did not provide sufficient evidence that his behavior had changed.
“He lacks an established right attitude towards the crime, which requires him to understand its true nature. To condemn and reject it as completely unacceptable. And here
it’s not about doing
self-confession,
and to show a transformed consciousness, ”the judges said.
They are of the opinion that there is a selective approach in the decision of Judge Miroslava Todorova. Preference was given to the positive features of Kanchev, but not to the problematic ones. He had another side – he was trying to control the situation, he had expectations that he was right, he was focused on success when he felt respected, he needed to show his well-groomed body. Possible sudden mood swings were also revealed, especially under the influence of stress.
“There are manifestations of egocentrism and low tolerance for monotony and boredom, narcissism, perfectionism, high personal standards,” the judges listed parts of the experts’ conclusion.
