When you’re going through the configuration of a new computer, the part where you have to choose a username may not be the most important thing. You might key in the first thing that comes to mind and think you can change it later. It’s not really that simple – you’re at least partially stuck with your choice.
It is no longer obvious how to change usernames in Windows, but it can be done and is not very difficult. There are several ways, but we show the easiest.
The problem is that this does not change the name of your user folder. If you’re happy with the correct username, but the wrong folder name, everything is fine. If you belong to those who want order and order, it gets worse.
It is also possible to change the name of the user folder, but it is a slightly risky procedure and you have to keep your tongue in your mouth. If something goes wrong, Windows can become unusable and a reinstallation is required. A safer way if you are the least bit unsure is to create a new user, move all data to the new profile and then delete the old one.
Either way, back up or create a restore point before going all out.
1. Change username
As I said, just changing the name is not difficult. Click the Start button, type netplwiz and start the program. Double-click your username in the list. Change and click OK.
2. Become an administrator
Create a new account with administrator privileges (Settings, Fifty, Family and other users, Add someone else). Then add a user without a Microsoft account. Log out of your regular account and log in with the new one.
3. Find the name
Rename your user folder in Explorer (located in the folder C:Users). Start Registereditorn (click the Start button, type regedit and pressure Enter). Click your way to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionProfileList.
4. Select profile
There are several profiles in the list. Select the one with your old name in the value ProfileImagePath. Double-click the value and change to your new folder name. Close, log out and log in with your regular user. If everything works, delete the temporary user.
