In Belarus, a trial against members of the opposition coordination council Marija Kolesnikov and Maxim Znak began on Wednesday. They are being tried for public calls to participate in activities that threaten national security, for conspiracy to seize state power in an unconstitutional manner, and for the formation and leadership of an extremist group.

They face up to 12 years in prison.
Last year, Kolesnikov joined the Coordination Council set up by the opposition and took on the role of opposition leader alongside Svyatlan Cihanouska and Veronica Cepkalo.
Kolesnikova has been in prison since September 8 last year. She was detained after unsuccessful attempts by the authorities to forcibly remove him from the country.
Znak, a lawyer at the headquarters of former presidential candidate Viktor Babarico, who was initially charged with economic crimes, was arrested a day later.
The trial will be closed, and Babariko’s supporters explain this by their unwillingness to allow the defendants to re-inspire the Belarusian people.
