The trial against Ryan Routh, accused of attempted murder against former president and Republican candidate Donald Trump on a golf course in Florida, United States, will begin on November 18.
Federal Judge Aileen Cannon, appointed to supervise the case, set the start of the trial for November 18 in a federal court in Fort Pierce, in eastern Florida, according to a document to which the EFE news agency had access this Thursday. .
On November 12, before the trial begins, there will be a preliminary hearing, as ordered by Judge Aileen Cannon, chosen by Donald Trump as a federal judge during his term. Cannon was in charge of the process against the former president for the mishandling of classified documents, a case that he dismissed and which is currently in the appeal process.
After Judge Aileen Cannon set the trial schedule, the U.S. Attorney’s Office requested more time to prepare the indictment against Ryan Routh, who remains detained without bail.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Dispoto filed a motion Wednesday to request an “indefinite delay” of the start of the trial, arguing the complexity of the case and the large volume of evidence collected in the 17 days after the arrest of Ryan Routh, 58, who has pleaded “not guilty” to the charges against him.
Dispoto explained that in the past two weeks, prosecutors have interviewed hundreds of witnesses, executed 13 search warrants in Florida, Hawaii and North Carolina, and seized hundreds of devices and other evidence. Among the seized material are thousands of videos that investigators have yet to analyze.
Additionally, the FBI continues to conduct forensic testing on other ballistic analyses, as well as fingerprint and DNA comparison.
Routh faces multiple charges, including attempted murder against Donald Trump on September 15 at the Trump International Golf Club, located in West Palm Beach and owned by the former president. Additionally, he faces two weapons charges, including removing the serial number from a firearm and possessing a weapon while a convicted felon.
On the day of the alleged assassination attempt, Ryan Routh was detected by the Secret Service while he was armed with a semi-automatic rifle hidden behind some bushes on the golf course. At that moment, Donald Trump was with a group of friends a hole away.
An officer opened fire upon observing the rifle poking through a fence, at which point Routh fled the scene without returning gunfire. However, the accused left behind the weapon with his fingerprints, according to the Prosecutor’s Office.
The defendant was later arrested by local police while driving a vehicle northbound on Interstate 95. The incident is being investigated by Florida authorities, so Routh could face additional state charges.
