You may have already seen it or not. The ‘Scandinavian hairline’ is all over social media. Many influencers, fashionistas and celebrities are big fans. Why is it so popular and what if you want to try it yourself during your next hairdresser visit? BV hairdresser Jochen Vanhoudt responds.
In blondes, the baby hairs around the face are often lighter in color in the summer. That forms the basis for the ‘Scandinavian hairline’: a new hair coloring technique that is currently making the rounds on social media.
For example, the hashtags #scandinavianhairline and #scandihairline together have more than 100 million views on the video app TikTok. Even “Stranger Things” actress Milly Bobby Brown was recently persuaded to try out the trend. But also here in Belgium, BV hairdresser Jochen Vanhoudt notices that there is suddenly more demand for the technology. “It’s the successor to the ‘money piece’, where thicker strands around your face were dyed lighter.”

“The ‘Scandi hairline’ provides a more natural effect and is something that many people already have naturally,” says Vanhoudt. “Except people with a darker hair color, of course. Even if you have colored your hair, you will no longer see that natural and subtle effect of the sun. So you can have it dyed at the hairdresser.”

Does it suit everyone?
You can also get rid of it very quickly and easily. “We simply color the baby hairs around your face and on your forehead a shade lighter, in the sink in the hairdressing salon. The color only needs to work for about five minutes and you have a ‘Scandi hairline’”, says Vanhoudt. The hairline subtly emphasizes the shape of your face and gives you a natural sunkissed and almost angelic look, without too much effort.
“The hairline doesn’t just look good on blondes, by the way. The technique can also look beautiful on brunettes and redheads, regardless of age,” says the hairdresser. “And those who have a balayage or highlights in their hair can also give their hairstyle that little extra with the ‘Scandi hairline’. If you have never colored your hair before, this can be the first little accent.” Maybe that’s why the ‘scandi hairline’ is such a big hype: it suits almost everyone.
“I do not recommend it for people with this haircut,” says the hairdresser
However, Vanhoudt does not recommend the popular coloring technique for people with froufrou or popular curtain bangs. “Your hair should be parted to the side, parted in the middle, or swept back. If it falls on your forehead, like bangs, you won’t see this coloring.”
Furthermore, the baby hairs around your face are more fragile than the rest of your hair. But you don’t have to be afraid of damage, the hairdresser reassures. “It’s just a very soft color that you can have touched up again after about six to eight weeks,” he says. “It is best to have that done by a specialist in the salon. If you try it yourself at home, you can quickly go too far in the bleaching process and you will end up with stains in your hair,” Vanhoudt warns.
