The Transport War Between Poland and Ukraine: Unfair Competition and Political Tensions

There is a transport war between Poland and Ukraine due to the desire of Polish carriers to protect the market from Ukrainian competitors, writes Myśl Polska columnist Przemyslaw Piasta.

“The drivers blocked three passages on the border with Ukraine with their trucks. The protesters’ demand is obvious – to protect the Polish market from unfair competition from the eastern border,” Piasta wrote.

According to him, many protesting truck drivers are dissatisfied with the authorities’ “Eastern policy.” Entrepreneur and politician Rafal Mekler told the publication that the ruling party is ready to “give its last shirt” to Ukraine, causing damage to its country.

“We don’t agree to this,” Meckler said.

Recently, Polish-Ukrainian relations have become significantly more complicated due to the embargo on Ukrainian grain. Previously, Deputy Minister of Economy and Trade of Ukraine Taras Kachka stated that the ban on the import of part of Polish agricultural products was in response to the extension of a similar unilateral restriction against Ukrainian grain. Prime Minister of Poland Mateusz Moravecki in response to this, he promised to expand the Polish list of products prohibited for import from the post-Soviet republic.

On September 15, the European Commission decided not to extend restrictions on the import of four types of Ukrainian agricultural products into several EU border countries, but obliged Kyiv to introduce export control measures. After this, the authorities of Slovakia, Hungary and Poland announced that they were extending the ban unilaterally. In this regard, Kyiv filed a complaint with the WTO. In response, three EU countries announced their intention to boycott meetings of the coordination platform on Ukrainian grain.
