In China, the Barbie doll is a toy, not a cultural icon. The Mattel group wanted to change that in 2009 and opened a six-story Barbie house in Shanghai. There you could not only buy Barbies in all designs, but also Barbie furniture and Barbie dresses, a café, a spa, a bridal shop. Two years later, Mattel had to stop the experiment. In China, Barbie sales fell short of expectations, and the Barbie house only made losses.
