A delegation of the business and union organizations that make up the Transfronterizo Group in the Cadiz region of Campo de Gibraltar holds a meeting this Thursday, October 10 in Madrid with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of the Government of Spain, José Manuel Albares , to address the current situation regarding the negotiations for the Rock after Brexit.
The meeting takes place one day after the meeting that Albares held this past Wednesday with representatives of the Junta de Andalucía, the Provincial Council of Cádiz, the Commonwealth of Municipalities and mayors of the Campo de Gibraltar region.
This new meeting with the Cross-Border Group takes place at the initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in response to the request presented a couple of weeks ago by this same entity. Thus, during the meeting it is expected that the ministerial official will convey to the representatives of Campo-Gibraltar civil society the situation of the negotiating process between the European Union and Great Britain on the Treaty of Gibraltar.
For its part, the Transfronterizo Group is going to deliver to Albares the latest declaration approved by the plenary session of this entity, in which they point out their concerns and demands to the institutional agents participating in this negotiating process.
At Wednesday’s meeting, the minister reported on the negotiations regarding Gibraltar after the last meeting held in Brussels last September in which, for the moment, no agreement has been reached.
Afterwards, Albares has once again transferred the pressure to the United Kingdom and has asked that it “say yes” to the agreement on Gibraltar put on the table by Spain and the European Commission, warning that if it does not do so before November 10, the new controls on the fence. However, he has clarified that this is something that “has nothing to do with the Gibraltar agreement”, nor imposed by Spain, but rather it is a new system for the entire Schengen area and that therefore it will be applied in all borders of access to it.
For its part, the Andalusian Government has requested that work be done on a “plan b” with specific measures that “strengthen the economic and social position of Campo de Gibraltar” if an agreement is not reached in the negotiations between Europe and the United Kingdom. United by the situation of the Rock after Brexit, also regretting that there is no news regarding the last meeting held in summer.
Representing the mayors of the region, the mayor of San Roque, Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix (PSOE), has pointed out that to reach an agreement on Gibraltar, “decisions are needed that in this case require courage.” For his part, the mayor of Algeciras, José Ignacio Landaluce (PP), has put on the table that companies in the area are “distressed”, while the councilor of La Línea de la Concepción, Juan Franco (Linea 100×100) , has warned of the effects of biometric controls starting November 10.
