City railway with stops in the neighborhoods, the Sea Garden, the salt pans, the airport, and then in Pomorie. This is not a promise for the future, but a real picture in Burgas from the last century. It disappeared exactly 50 years ago, in 1971, after which the railway, which passes through the city and continues by the sea, is used very rarely, and only for freight purposes. This reminds “Capital” in an article about the project for a new city railway to connect the new center, which is formed on the site of the old port and the station, two of the big neighborhoods – “Bratya Miladinovi” and “Lazur” Sarafovo quarter.
The National Railway Infrastructure Company has already prepared a BGN 104m project to reconstruct the old railway line and reconstruct its extension to the airport, as it now runs three kilometers west of it. The funds are expected to be provided under the operational program “Transport Connectivity” 2021 – 2027.
Such a transport connection will undoubtedly change the appearance of the city. Such trains are available in almost all major cities around the world, as they provide fast and regular transport that is independent of traffic jams and is easily combined with other modes of transport.
The problem in this case, however, is BDZ. So far, the state-owned carrier has not shown that it can successfully operate passenger transport and offer adequate service to the expectations of both citizens and tourists. Because 3 trains a day with a delay of 30 minutes would never justify such a large-scale investment. The option of giving the line to a private operator is not on the agenda, as this area is almost monopolized by the state-owned company.
Everything about the project you can read in “Capital”.
