The tragedy shocked Soviet citizens.
Lyudmila Pakhomova and Alexander Gorshkov started their careers in the 60s. At first, they were not able to succeed, but thanks to constant training and hard work, they became known first to the entire USSR, and then to the whole world.
The famous duo has conquered more than one European and World Championship. They, as it seemed to the public, easily coped with any difficulties and each time shocked the audience with new elements that no athlete has used so far. After several years of working together, they became husband and wife, and in 1976 they learned that they would go to the Olympics and become the first ice dancers to represent this sport at the main championship.
Long training and perseverance led the skaters to victory. But after that, they decided to retire, leaving the skating rink. A few years later, Pakhomova found out that she had been diagnosed with cancer of the lymphatic system. And the skater chose not to treat a terrible disease, just living out the remaining days and completely resigned herself to fate.
Gorshkov, however, could not agree with his wife’s position. He tried to convince her, but could not do anything. For 36 years, he survived his chosen one. And in memory of her, he never went on the ice again.
