The Tragic Events of Vigonovo: The Case of Filippo Turetta and Giulia Cecchettin

The Venice prosecutor’s office will acquire the recording of the call of the witness who, on the evening of 11 November last, called 112 to report a dispute in the car park in Vigonovo (Venice), which later turned out to be the first attack on Filippo Turetta a Giulia Cecchettin. No police car went to the scene. The witness couldn’t even give details about the license plate. Would an immediate intervention have saved Giulia? The following day, the father filed a missing person report with the Vigonovo administration and the search began for the killer, who will be handed over to the Italian authorities on Saturday.

Intervention not considered urgent

On the evening of Saturday 11 November, a resident of via Aldo Moro, in Vigonovo, called 112 to report having witnessed an attack in the street. He says he saw a dark Fiat Grande Punto driving away in the darkness, without being able to see the license plate number. But no police patrol was sent to the scene. Why? In that car, it will only be discovered later, Filippo Turetta has just kidnapped Giulia Cecchettin. It’s 11.18pm when the neighbor dials the emergency number. At 11.40pm, twenty-two minutes later, in the industrial area of Fossò, the student was pushed from behind, fell to the ground and hit her head. Turetta loads her lifelessly into the car and begins his escape, until abandoning her among the rocks in Friuli.

Carabinieri: no files opened in the prosecutor’s office

The call received at 112 “talked about an argument between two people who had already gotten back into the car and left” with the witness who “was unable to write down the license plate”. We learned this from Carabinieri sources regarding the phone call to the emergency number from a neighbor of Giulia Cecchettin, who had heard two people arguing. The sources also underline that at that time on Saturday “there were other interventions underway by the patrols”, that at the moment there are no open files in the prosecutor’s office relating to the phone call and that there is no second phone call to 112 from a vigilantes.

The investigating judge has five days to carry out the warrant interrogation, starting from the moment of notification of the European arrest warrant, which will be formally made in Frankfurt.
