Kivlenks died tragically on July 4, a national holiday in the United States. The NHL club where he performed, Columbus Blue Jackets, reported that the 24-year-old Latvian died in a tragic accident, sustaining serious head injuries. “Medical staff were called in immediately, but Matiss left shortly after his arrival,” the club’s official statement reads.

Later, the Police Department reported that the athlete was killed in a fireworks-related accident during the July 4 celebration in the US. Fireworks like a mortar tipped over and began firing at people nearby. Kivlenks along with other people was in the jacuzzi. Unfortunately, while escaping, he slipped and hit his head on the concrete.
The Latvian died heroically?
Later information provided by the media in Latvia and by the medical examiner was slightly different. It turned out that one of the fireworks hit Kivlenks in the chest and this “blow” turned out to be fatal.

The player’s friend, Elvis Merzlikins, revealed during the funeral ceremonies that Kivlenks had performed a truly heroic deed just before his death. – I was literally meters away from him. He saved my (unborn – editorial note) son, he saved my wife, he saved me. He died as a hero, said Merzlikins, who performed with Kivlenks in NHL, in Columbus Blue Jackets and the Latvian national team.
– My son’s middle name is Matiss. If it weren’t for him, if it hadn’t hit me and my wife, there were 50 other people there.
