The Tragic Death of American Star Adrienne Shelley

Mirna Walid – Beirut – Today marks the anniversary of the death of the late American star Adrienne Shelley, who was born in Queens, New York, to Ellen Langbaum and Sheldon Levine.

After graduating from Jericho High School in Jericho, New York, she attended Boston University and majored in film production.
She dropped out after her first year and moved to Manhattan, where she made a name for herself in independent films with her work in The Unknownable Truth (1989) and Trust (1990). She eventually moved behind the camera, writing and directing I’ll Take You There (1999) and Waitress (2007) (her final film).
On this day in November 1, 2006, Shelley was found dead, hanging in the bathroom of her work studio apartment in the West Village. An initial examination of the scene revealed no suspicious circumstances, and the police apparently believed it to be a suicide. Her husband insisted that she would never take her own life, and performed a re-examination of the bathroom that revealed a suspicious shoe print. Police arrested Diego Belco, a 19-year-old construction worker from Ecuador, who confessed to killing Shelley and making it look like she had committed suicide.
