The Tragic Case of Game Streaming and the Dangers of Overwork: A Story of Exhaustion and Exploitation

Video games and their streaming on the Internet have evolved over the past 20 years to the point where you can even make money from it.

In China, game streaming is a lucrative business. So media company Henan Qinyi Culture asked a student to stream games for 240 hours in 26 days and upload 15 short videos.

However, after taking on such a massive task, the student’s roommates found him dead.

It is suspected that he died of exhaustion after live streaming the game for five nights in a row.

The young man’s father claims that the media company convinced his son to switch from the day shift to the night shift in order to earn more money. That means he streamed from nine in the evening until six in the morning, five nights in a row before the day he died.

The company denies that it convinced the guy to switch to the night shift, but admitted that some streamers find it difficult to make money without working. The company explained that they simply provide a place for streamers to do their work, deducting a commission from the money they make. In this particular case, company representatives stated that the student was not an “official employee” and died in his apartment outside of working hours.

As compensation, the company has offered the family of the deceased 697 US dollars, but it is currently unknown whether the family will take legal action against the media company.
