The Caribbean carnival was a huge success this Saturday in Montpellier. Thousands of people from all over France gathered in the streets for this festive and musical event which puts West Indian culture in the spotlight. A gigantic release after these last two years marked by the Covid.
Percussions, conch, dance and good humor, this Saturday, Montpellier becomes Caribbean… The Caribbean carnival 2022, whereorganized by the association WIF (West Indian Family), attracted a considerable crowd, between 8,000 and 10,000 people.
The procession crisscrossed the streets of the city to the rhythm of the music, while respecting the Covid measures, to arrive on the forecourt of the town hall.

Originally from several overseas territories, some musical groups are regulars and make the trip every year. There are also a lot of Ile-de-France residents, who left for vacation on Friday evening… under the Languedoc sun, with a low 15°C.
Before the parade, the gwoka groups warm up. Most come from the Paris region.
“We come to have fun but also to spread our culture. To show that… come to our house, you’ll see!”.
The Caribbean carnival has its customs, we find them first in disguises. The theme this year is: “under the ocean, bunch of rascals!”. So, we had to follow the sirens… “We’re happy, we’re happy”.
Once a year, we can laugh, let off steam and no one escapes it, especially after 2 years of confinement and restrictions.
