The Tradition of Schultüten in Bicultural Schools: A Unique Back-to-School Experience for Students in France’s Moselle Region

The start of the school year is an immutable rite, but at the bicultural Saint-Pierre school where German is taught, there is another: the presentation of Schultüten to new preparatory course students. Friday, under a cheeky sun, the CM2 seniors were happy to give their younger ones these little cones which mark the transition to “the big school”. The tradition comes from Germany and it is logical that it is transposed here.

The Schultüte contains small school materials (a pencil case with pencils, an eraser, a ruler and a pencil sharpener), a small key ring or markers which will accompany the students in their school learning. It comes in the form of a large colorful cone, often made by the students themselves or offered by the Department of Moselle, in the form of a DIY kit. For the 7th consecutive year, the Department is responsible for organizing, alongside the Directorate of Departmental National Education Services, the awarding of the Schultüten.

For this new school year, 1,400 students will receive their Schultüte, in the fifty-nine schools in Moselle offering in-depth teaching of German (bicultural schools, DEAA), or benefiting from the intervention of a German-speaking educational assistant. This system is unique in France; it is co-financed by local authorities, alongside the Department.
