Bulgarians turned their backs because of the high prices
Merchants in Edirne claim that the sharp increase in prices in Turkey discourages Bulgarian tourists from shopping there, writes “Maritsa”. Birkan Makas, who owns his own shop in the border town, told Turkish news agency Anka:
“Prices have gone up so much that some of our traders have been fair-minded and increased the prices of goods more than necessary. They tried to sell goods worth, say, 3 pounds for 5 pounds. This situation had a negative impact on both the locals and the Bulgarian tourists. Even Bulgarians have started to find our prices expensive now. ” The trader continued, although the current exchange rate is now close to 19.50 Turkish lira to the lev, the prices of some products are the same as prices in Bulgaria.
Another trader Muhammed Yozen noted: “Interest in Edirne has decreased due to the increase in prices.
Bulgarians still prefer Istanbul and Karclareli (Lozengrad) because the prices there are more normal.” He said that the active shopping season has just started, but the shopping habits of Bulgarians have changed. They don’t come to the market as usual.
Now they are increasingly traveling for sightseeing and leisure,” concluded Yosen.
According to the official BNB exchange rate, one Bulgarian exchange rate is exchanged for 19.47 Turkish lira, and 100 TRL is now 5.13 BGN 2 years ago, Turkey’s trade with its border neighbors Bulgaria and Greece was at awesome. Bulgarians came in large numbers to Edirne, where they satisfied many of their needs from these areas.
Until recently, cross-border tourists from Bulgaria and Greece returned to their home countries buying many products, from textiles to white goods, from electronic products to car parts, from food and beverages to medicine.
When trade was good, merchants in the frontiers were very happy. “Now the Turks have become poor as a result of the big inflation and they are not buying, but still the Bulgarians continued to come to shop,” said traders.
In the last few months, prices have increased 3-5 times and have caught up with and exceeded inflation in Turkey, so markets and shops have become less profitable for him tourists from neighboring countries.
The locals were crushed by exorbitant prices, and inflation in these areas was higher than the average of Turkey.
