Grawand, gray wall. Matilde Lorenzi, who died this morning in Bolzano, it had fallen on Monday 28 October, in the morning, on one of the fast slopes of the Val Senales glacier, one of the most classic training places at this stage of the season for the Italian teams and not only: with the national European Cup team, on the Schnalstaler Gletscher (snow guaranteed all year round, says the claim on the official website) recently the teams from Sweden, Switzerland, Slovenia and Croatia had also been there. Training and refresher courses for ski instructors also take place on the glacier.
At Grawand 1
The Grawand 1 it is a red run (second highest level of difficulty, after the black). An important fact is the altitude: the highest point of the track is at an altitude of 3212 metres, corresponding to the Glacier Hotel Grawand. The track is 850 meters long and reaches an altitude of 3013, where the Ötzi hut stands (not far from there the famous Similaun mummy was found in 1991). Not an excessive length, even if at over 3000 meters above sea level everything is more complicated due to the rarefaction of the air. Matilde Lorenzi would have fallen on a substantially flat section of the slope, in the terminal part, due to a “gleaning”, what happens when the skis move apart from the natural parallel position. The girl hit her face violently on the icy slope. The snow on the slope is currently no more than 15 centimeters deep and temperatures are very close to freezing. The last snowfall, according to real-time data provided by the official Val Senales website, dates back to 10 October.
