The Toyen painting was auctioned off in Prague for a record 78 million

The original painting called La Dame de pique comes from the highly regarded Toyen period. She painted it shortly after her arrival in Paris in 1926. “Toyen oil of comparable gallery quality and importance has never been more expensive before on the Czech and world auction market,” said the auction hall.

The most expensive piece of Toyen auctioned in the domestic auction so far was the painting Darkness in the Rainforest, sold in 2017 for 36 million crowns, including an auction surcharge.

The painting of Karel Gott, who died last year, called Lovers in the Shower (1998), sold for 259,000 at Sunday’s auction, which was his starting price. With an auction surcharge, it is CZK 356,950. The painting by Jakub Schikaneder Winter Flower sold for CZK 8.350 million and Čapek’s Oil Children in the Grass for CZK 7.865 million.
