The Top Unnecessary and Expensive Luxury Car Options

Experts have concluded that some options, such as two-tone paint, delivery to the dealer, illuminated grille and embroidered monograms on headrests, are unnecessary and lead to additional costs for luxury car buyers.

The first place in the ranking is taken by car delivery, which is completely free in a number of countries. Thus, Porsche charges $550 to ship the 2023 Porsche Panamera to the Porsche Experience Center in the United States, while European customers do not have to pay for delivery of the car.

Second on the list of additional options is the ability to choose a two-tone color for the car body. This technique helps create an attractive visual contrast, but at the same time increases the value of the car. Additionally, some luxury car manufacturers offer buyers the opportunity to choose any color to paint the car at an average price of $10,000 to $20,000.

In third place are keys that have an exclusive design or are made in the same style as the interior or exterior of the car. This is the most common luxury car personalization option and costs around $200 on average.

For keys with individual designs, illuminated radiator grilles are placed in the HotCars rating. They give the car an even more impressive appearance at night, but do not provide any practical benefit and add at least $1,700 to the price of the car.

Also included in the top five most unnecessary luxury car options were crystal-treated accessories, such as headlights and gear selectors. Such decorative finishing usually costs more than $1,000.

The sixth most useful and expensive luxury car option is carbon fiber bodywork. This is exactly what McLaren, Koenigsegg and Ford offer for their sports cars. However, in the case of the McLaren Senna, buyers who choose a carbon fiber body will have to shell out almost half a million dollars.

Another useless and expensive option is finishing the car interior with carbon fiber, aluminum and wood. Such personalization costs several thousand dollars.

Some luxury brands, such as Koenigsegg, offer customized luggage kits for some vehicles. For example, Koenigsegg Gemera buyers can order four bags for an additional fee. True, the cost of such a kit can exceed 10 thousand dollars.

Rounding out the top 10 most useful luxury car options are personalized concierge services, which cost an average of $200 per year, and custom-designed headrests with monograms, owner’s initials or logos.
