Bucharest-Ilfov leads the ranking of counties according to the balance of term deposits of the population, in lei and foreign currency at the end of December 2021, reaching a value of 34.6 billion lei, decreasing by 14.5% compared to the balance from the end of 2020, according to the latest NBR data.
Given that Bucharest-Ilfov is the economic epicenter in Romania, the evolution of term deposits of the population can act as a reference for the population trend of 2021. After a year 2020 full of restrictions and uncertainties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the year 2021 has come with a easing of restrictions, which pushed Romanians to use their money, their savings. However, the decrease in balances, both at the individual level of the counties and at the total level, was not substantial, with a decrease of 9.8% of the total balance of term deposits of the population on term, in lei and foreign currency. at 109.6 billion lei at the end of 2021, showing an opposite behavior compared to 2020, when Romanians kept their money in storage, not knowing what will happen in the pandemic context.
