Quite striking: the orange and lemon are not listed, while citrus fruits are known for their rich amount of vitamin C. The orange contains 50 milligrams of vitamin C per 100 grams. Yet there are quite a few fruits that contain a lot more vitamin C. We’ll list them from number five to one.
5. Strawberries
When you think of summer fruit, you probably think of strawberries. Fortunately, these popular fruits are also rich in vitamin C. With no less than 64 milligrams per 100 grams, strawberries are number five on the list. This way you can easily meet your vitamin C needs. Do you also want to watch your calorie intake? Then strawberries are a double recommendation: there are only about 32 kilocalories in a 100-gram container.
4. Kiwi
The kiwi, with its 79 milligrams per 100 grams, is in fourth place. What’s handy about this piece of fruit: after one kiwi you’re exactly on the perfect amount of your daily vitamin C intake. In addition, the kiwi is not only rich in vitamin C, the kiwi is also packed with vitamin E and potassium. And they ensure good digestion and therefore a good balance in our intestines.
3. Blackcurrant
Black currants are at number three. Not to be confused with blueberries, which are eaten much more often. The black currant is also known as the cassis berry. With a portion of 100 grams you will soon have an intake of 150 milligrams of vitamin C, almost double that of the kiwi. A good tip to stock up next time! For example, put them in a whole-wheat pancake, blend them into a smoothie or just eat them out of the hand. That is of course the healthiest option.
2. Guave
We have arrived at the lesser-known fruits. So feel like trying something different and getting extra vitamin C? Then you’re good with the guava. This fruit (seen in the photo above) is native to Central America. It has a light green or yellow skin and contains edible seeds inside. In addition to being rich in fiber and potassium, guava particularly excels in its amount of vitamin C. Per 100 grams of guava, it contains 200 milligrams of vitamin C. The orange is nothing compared to that, because it contains four times as much vitamin C!
1. Acerola
In first place, with no less than 1700 (!) milligrams of vitamin C per 100 grams, is the acerola; also called the barbados cherry or also the West Indian cherry. The acerola is found in the Caribbean and northern South America. It is therefore not surprising that the fruit is relatively unknown to us. You will therefore not easily encounter these cherries in the supermarket on the corner. However, due to the high vitamin C content, it is often processed into tablets and taken as supplements.
