The most common tricks of traders
We know that retailers use various tricks to entice customers to buy. Before we tell you the one that is most common now, let’s review the ones that traders have been using for many years.
Price ending 9
Among the most common ones is the price ending in 9. Psychologically, the price of CZK 199 is significantly lower than CZK 200. Why significantly? For the amount of 199 CZK, you will say that it costs 100 and something. On the contrary, the second variant is simply 200 CZK. Of course, the difference is only CZK 1, but the brain thinks otherwise. This trick was already known to the merchant Tomáš Baťa, who was one of the first to use price tags ending with the number 9 in our country.

Large shopping carts
If you are not going to do a big weekly shopping, but only go to the store for a few things, try to take only the small one in your hand instead of the shopping cart. Believe that you will save money. You can easily throw things you didn’t come for into the big trolley. You will have the feeling that you don’t have that much after all.
Mirrors
Have you noticed that in shops there are mirrors in places where you would not expect them? E.g. in dairy products. Why is that so? They increase the richness of the offer. Suddenly, thanks to them, there are optically twice as many products and thus a larger selection.
Goods at eye level
The goods that are the most expensive, or those that the seller wants to sell the most, are placed on the shelves at eye level. Simply where you see it first. Quickly look to the bottom shelf or up. You can find mostly comparable things there, but for less money.
Rebuilt shelves
Has it also happened that you came to your favorite store, where you go for regular shopping, and the shelves were cluttered? This is also a trick of the merchant to sell more goods. Most people go for the same items over and over and already know where they are. As a result, they avoid certain places. The moment the store changes, you suddenly find yourself in the aisles where you haven’t been before, and it’s been proven that often the customer throws in something new.
A discount for which you pay more money
Let’s face it, who wouldn’t be attracted by a sign with the words Sale or Lower price. But be careful, these offers are not always advantageous! This practice is most commonly used for goods such as dishwasher tablets, detergents, washing powders or baby diapers. We’ll show you with an example: At first glance, you see a discount of 28%. But if you look closely at the sign, you will discover velmi, but really in very small printthat the product is 29% more expensive than usual after this “advantageous” discount.

How is it possible?
Many people might say at this point that this is false advertising. But it’s not quite like that. The original high price of CZK 139.90 for the product really exists. Either that is the manufacturer’s suggested retail price, or this product really cost that much at launch. Which can be many years back. However, the fact is that the recommended retail price does not mean the selling price. If most sellers immediately set a lower price, others will adapt to it and the product is practically unsellable at the “original” higher price. In this case, which you can see in the photos above, we learn that over the last 30 days, the given product cost an average of CZK 77.90 and now you can buy it on sale for CZK 99.90. That doesn’t look very advantageous after all, does it?
How not to fly
As we already wrote above, this is not a case of deceptive advertising. The consumer’s only defense is to compare prices. Fortunately, these days we don’t have to go around all the shops and most of the prices can be found on the internet. And believe me, it really pays off.
