Today in an administrative torment of which one can be afraid of the outcome, Bordeaux is a legendary club in the French championship. With 6 Ligue 1, 4 Coupes de France and 3 Coupes de la Ligue, its well-flowered record ranks it easily in the Top 10 of French teams of all time. A rich history, and players more legendary than each other, arrived at the club with significant transfers.
5 – Bernard Lacombe
A legendary striker from Olympique Lyonnais where he trained, he was forcibly sold to Saint-Étienne where he only had one season left. Always as efficient, he joined Bordeaux in 1979 and was also part of the crazy 1980s of the Girondins de Bordeaux, 3 Titles and 2 Cups. If his first season questions Bordeaux, he later proves that his timid beginnings were just temporary and scored between 17 and 22 goals over the next 5 seasons! His last two seasons made stains in his beautiful passage in Bordeaux, he is not far from it a legend of the club, and formed a terrific duo with Alain Giresse.
4 – Marius Treasure
Révélation Acéiste, it is at Olympique de Marseille that Marius Trésor cut his teeth and saw what is called a “prime”. Considered one of the best French defenders in history, he joined Bordeaux in 1980, then aged 30. Although his 4 seasons in Bordeaux were not his best, he keeps a sparkling level and allows the Girondin club to be crowned French Champion in 1984 alongside Jean Tigana and Alain Giresse. The consecration for his last professional season. Despite injuries, he then won his only Ligue 1. Arrived as a star of the transfer window, he expanded his record and became the pillar of an impassive Gironde defense.
3 – Pedro Miguel Pauleta
Parisian legend, it was first in Bordeaux that this Portuguese center-forward made Ligue 1 dream. Unearthed at Deportivo la Coruña in 2000, Pauleta’s transfer was a resounding success. In 3 seasons he established himself as the best striker in the championship and signed in Paris for a nice Girondin profit. Arriving at the end of the 2000 summer transfer window, he seduced coach Elie Baup by scoring a hat-trick in his first match. In a first season where he reached the symbolic bar of 20 achievements, he knows the glory the following season when with 22 goals, he finishes best player of the championship and wins the Coupe de la Ligue. For his last Gironde year, he did it again and won this individual title again by scoring 1 more goal than last year.. Arrived unknown, left adored, Pauleta saw a moving last match against Lille, where all of Bordeaux applauded him for his evening double with friends, especially for his 3 seasons when the team came close to the podium without appearing there, as well as for the won Cup.
2 – Jean Tigana
Born in Bamako, Jean Tigana is a French legend. While he hatched in Toulon, he shone in Lyon before joining the great Bordeaux of Alain Giresse. A very technical but also rough or even intractable midfielder, he spent 8 seasons in Gironde and dominated Ligue 1. Champion of France 1984, 1985 and 1987, he also won the Coupe de France 1986 and 1987. A tireless worker in midfield, he left his mark on Bordeaux, being one of the pillars of the best team in the history of the club. Like Alain Giresse, he ended his career at OM and later became a coach.
1 – Alain Giresse
Trained at the club, he saw the best seasons of the Girondin club. Best Element of “Magic square” composed of Jean Tigana, Bernard Genghini and Luis Fernandez, he won Ligue 1 with Bordeaux in 1984 then 1985, won the Coupe de France in 1986 and finished top scorer in the Europa League in 1983, lost in the round of 16. Driving force of the French team, he is above all one of the best players in the history of the Girondins by being the top scorer with 158 goals in 16 years. If he is a pure product of the training center, his departure at the age of 34 from the club is heartbreaking for the supporters, sad to see their “Gigi” leaving for Olympique de Marseille where he will only play two seasons. Since trainer, his transfer symbolized the end of a Bordeaux reign of the 1980s…
