The Top 5 Cinema Oddballs: From ‘Barbenheimer’ to Farting Harry Potter

Contents

“Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” have dominated the cinema summer. This gave rise to the portmanteau “Barbenheimer”. And a hype that spread widely. So much so that both films are now interwoven into one. A crazy isolated case? Not at all, as film history shows. A top 5 of cinema oddballs.

We remember: “Barbenheimer” was an internet phenomenon, created in response to the simultaneous release of the cinema hits “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer”. The whole thing went so far that the makers of the films asked viewers to watch the feminist puppet comedy and the historical atomic bomb drama one after the other.

Now something amazing has become known: “Barbenheimer” becomes a film, reported the renowned trade magazine “Hollywood Reporter”. It is directed by horror filmmaker and B-movie specialist Charles Band, who made works such as “Demonic Toys” and “Corona Zombies”.

The story: The brilliant Dr. Bambi J Barbenheimer lives in Dolltopia with her lover Twink Dollman. Somehow she ends up in the real world, where she gets to know people at their worst. She sees only one solution: wipe out Homo Sapiens with an atomic bomb.

There has always been a way to make crazy stories into films. In all price ranges, at various levels. Five examples:

“Killer Tongue” (1996): Tongues can be deadly

In this Spanish-British trash film, a piece of meteorite ends up in gangster bride Candy’s soup bowl and in the food of her four poodles. The result: The poodles turn into men and Candy’s tongue mutates into a talking something that is hungry – for human flesh.

“The Lobster” (2015): Lobster instead of love

Legend: Find your soul mate as quickly as possible – or stay alone and turn into an animal? “The Lobster” is a bizarre dystopia. KEYSTONE / AP A24 Films

Crazy stories aren’t just the stuff of cheap B-movies: “The Lobster,” for example, winner of the Palme d’Or and nominated for an Oscar. Single people have to find a romantic partner within 45 days or they will be turned into animals. Poor prospects for singles in the not too distant future. The whole thing is weird but challenging. With the noble mimes Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz.

“Junior” (1994): Arnie is pregnant

Legend: A pregnant man in the service of science. Arnold Schwarzenegger with a baby bump in the film “Junior”. IMAGO Images / Cinema Publishers Collection / Universal Pictures

In the mid-1990s, Arnold Schwarzenegger was at the peak of his career – whether as the sword-wielding barbarian Conan or as the killer robot in “Terminator”. In the comedy “Junior” he took a completely different approach: he plays a scientist who agrees to get pregnant in order to test a new drug. Unfortunately, the anonymous egg comes from a colleague, played by Emma Thompson, who doesn’t find it funny at all. A different kind of baby happiness.

“Iron Sky” (2012): Nazis behind the moon

Legend: Nazi spaceships attack Earth. In the film “Iron Sky,” lunar Nazis want to gain world domination. IMAGO / Mary Evans

What no one knew: There are lunar Nazis, descendants of fascists who fled to Earth’s satellite in 1945. They want to conquer the earth. It’s just stupid that their technology is completely outdated. The science fiction film came about through crowdfunding and even spawned a sequel.

“Swiss Army Man” (2016): A farting Harry Potter

Legend: A corpse as a Swiss army knife? “Swiss Army Man”: a macabre film with Daniel Radcliffe in one of the leading roles. IMAGO Images / Album

Six years after his last appearance as a boy wizard, Daniel Radcliffe could be seen as a farting corpse. A castaway on an island discovers him. Because of his severe flatulence, he can use the dead man as a jet ski to get to the mainland. On the way back to civilization, the corpse turns out to be a source of water and can even talk at the end. Real Hogwarts magic. Just not entirely suitable for young people.
