The time has come: the long-awaited day and time schedule of Lowlands 2023 is available in the app. Traditionally, we have it block schedule and we will present you with a number of pain points in the planning. Here’s the top 12!
It is now really getting very close: Lowlands. And with that, the choice stress only increases. Rushing back and forth doesn’t seem like an option with these program pain points. Or is there perhaps a secret shortcut between Alpha and India? These are the 12 most difficult clashes of Lowlands 2023!
The very first moment of doubt presents itself in the form of a trilemma and that already on Friday between 17:00-18:00. On the Bravo On stage you will find London’s Jessie Ware, who will deliver a soulful and extremely danceable set with accompanying backing choir and band. Near the Bravo, offers the smaller India almost at the same time (17:10-18:10) stage to American indie rocker Snail Mail. Expect passionately intimate songs, sometimes fragile and sometimes hard, during an intense live show.
Do you prefer to kick off Friday a little firmer? Then you can also go in the direction Heinekenwhere Mother Mother (17:15-18:15) will undoubtedly put a solid, but well-oiled show on the shelves. The Canadian indie rock band already has a lot of hits to its name in its homeland and knows via TikTok to conquer the rest of the world,
With a show in the Alpha to (20:30), the British band Nothing But Thieves has the honor on Friday sunset slot to fill in. The rock band travels to Buddinghuizen with a new record in their pocket and the headline spot at Lowlands is a crowning achievement of the popularity that the gentlemen have built up in our country in recent years.
The genre-pushing Nia Archives can make her appearance half an hour later in India (21:00-22:00). The British DJ, producer and singer is regarded as one of the most exciting and compelling new artists in the UK and will effortlessly combine rousing jungle and dreamy R&B.
3. Friday: Underworld vs. Spiceworld sing-a-long
Whether you have been in the techno scene for a while or have been in it since this decade; who doesn’t know the pioneers of Underworld? Karl Hyde’s dance moves, the impressive light show and the coming together of young and old; everything comes together in the Alpha (22:45-00:00). Don’t feel like raving, but want to sing? Then you can indulge yourself for more than two hours in the Echo (23:10-01:00) during Spiceworld’s Sing-A-Long show. Spice up your life!
The London Ezra Collective (Heineken, 13:30-14:30) consists of Femi (who also drums for Gorillaz) as drummer and bandleader, Joe Armon-Jones on keys, James Mollison on saxophone, Ife Ogunjobi on trumpet, and Femi’s younger brother TJ on bass guitar. The group of musicians is seen as a pioneer of their city in a new musical phase, where genres such as jazz, grime, afrobeat and more are smoothly connected.
Singer-songwriter Amber Arcades from Utrecht proves that there is also enough talent from our own country at Lowlands 2023. With her dreamy indie pop, she will have us floating in the de early in the day India to (13:15). Were it not that there is even more to choose from on early Saturday. For example, there is a special Coke Studio show in the Alpha (13:00-14:00), called 50YR Hip Hop Tribute. Bounce awake to both classic and modern anthems from hip-hop history.
Texts about something? Check. A frenzied Paradiso earlier this year that the reviewers loved? Check. Live a jazzy edge? Check. If you put it like that, you would think that the choice has already been made at this time. On Saturday (19:15-20:15) goes hip-hop phenom Loyle Carner the Bravo put on stilts. Well, then you know that. Not a fan of hip-hop? Fifteen minutes later, the Heineken the Swedish punk band Viagra Boys (19:30-20:30). This pearl already proved at Rock Werchter 2023 that it is a great live act.
And while it may be a bit early to be pounding, for the rave enthusiast an alternative can be found in the India (19:10-20:00). The Australian Partiboi69 guarantees dazzling party rave at maximum speed.
6. Zaterdag: King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard vs. M83
The amount of energy that the men of King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard bring to a live performance is already reason to be between 21:30 at 22:30 in the Bravo to stand. The Australian rock band is known for its experimental sound, fusing genres such as rock, psychedelia, jazz and also metal. The band has already released more than 20 albums.
Still can King Gizz count on stiff competition: in the Heineken stands almost at the same time (21:45-22:45) a special French group: M83. Their music is characterized by dense guitar and synthesizer layers, extensive use of reverb effects and lyrics that are often softly sung in a dream pop style. Their biggest hit ‘Midnight City’ is guaranteed to provide a massive goosebumps moment for the audience.
7. Saturday: Charlotte De Witte vs. Coloray b2b Effect
The last clash on Saturday heralds the rest of the dance night. Do you go to the Alpha (22:45-00:00) for the very first techno closing on the main stage of Lowlands, where Charlotte De Witte will confirm techno’s mainstream status? Or would you rather turn to the Bravo (23:00-01:00) where a special duo set is planned: Coloray b2b Ineffekt. Add the euphoric breakbeats and nightly basses of Ineffekt to the winding synths and melancholic eighties melodies of Coloray and you know: this is going to be a beautiful night!
Arriving on the last day of the festival, we have another trilemma available before noon. So you could chill at the Lima at the picturesque folkpop of Beatenberg (16:00-17:00). In the Alpha you will find the British bouncy guitar rock full of forays into acoustic and electronic music from Bombay Bicycle Club (15:40-16:40). In the Heineken finally, you can immediately take your feet off the floor to the irresistibly sultry and rousing sounds of Franc Moody (15:00-16:00).
Guitarist, musician and producer Steve Lacy made his breakthrough as a member of THE INTERNET, which earned him a Grammy nomination in 2015. In addition to his own music, his resume also shows collaborations with Kendrick Lamar, Solange, Vampire Weekend and Blood Orange, among others. With world hits like ‘Bad Habit’ and ‘Dark Red’ on the set list, he will put on a super star worthy show in the Alpha (17:45-18:45).
There are countless examples of the fact that post-punk bands from England are doing well in recent years. But even among eccentric groups like black midi and Sleaford Mods, the following group stands out. The music of Dry Cleaning (India, 18:00-19:00) mainly consists of spoken word supported with music.
We hope the Bravo it lasts until Sunday evening, because one thing is certain: it will be expertly demolished by Turnstile (18:45-19:45). Partly thanks to energetic frontman Brendan Yates, the hardcore punk band revives times that are reminiscent of Rage Against the Machine. Expect moshpits to pop up like mushrooms everywhere in the audience.
If you prefer to let yourself be enchanted by music, Fever Ray (Heineken, 19:00-20:00) to the right address. Oppressive basses, compelling beats, haunting melodies and the characteristic cutting vocal cords. And all wrapped up in an eccentric show. If that doesn’t arouse curiosity, what does?
At first glance, this should not be a clash for the vast majority of festival-goers. It’s hard to imagine a bigger gap between two genres. Yet these two acts have one thing in common: they both offer a visual spectacle during live performances. If you opt for the atmospheric electronic supergroup Moderat (Bravo, 20:50-21:50) ? Or for the menacing and mysterious neofolk of Heilung (Heineken, 21:00-22:00)?
Billie Eilish can no longer be ignored from the list of contemporary pop stars and that at the age of 21. It is therefore more than deserved that the singer takes the biggest stage (Alpha, 21:45-23:00) may conclude at Lowlands 2023. While the crowd will no doubt be big at Billie’s, the X-Ray (21:45-22:45) also bulge out. American experimental hip-hop group Clipping. previously proved at Le Guess Who 2022, where they were also curators, that the songs of the rock-solid Visions of Bodies Being Burned also perform well live.
People who prefer to keep an electronic path after Moderat can go to the India (22:00-23:00), where French multi-instrumentalist MEZERG will treat us to a danceable mix of acid, jazz, funk and techno by means of effect pedals, keyboards and theremin.
