Used cars are usually priced lower than new, but there may be some exceptions. So, here are the most overrated cars on the second-hand market.
Price is one of the deciding factors when it comes to purchasing a vehicle, which is why many buyers turn to the used car market. However, some used cars prove to be more expensive than the same new models, largely due to their limited inventory and inaccessibility.
Car Help Corner helps us once again to make a list of the most overrated cars on the used car market. The information was taken from studies conducted by iSeeCars, a search engine dedicated to cars. However, the data comes from North America, and car prices may differ on the car market in Romania or Europe.
10. Honda Civic
The Japanese manufacturer is known for the reliability of its cars, but the availability of this car is quite limited. The price of a used Civic would reach $29,683 (27,758 euros) – $297 (277 euros) more than such a new car.
9. Ford Bronco
The same case we meet with the Ford Bronco. As a car with limited stock, but highly sought after, the price of this pre-owned model jumps over the value of the new car. Buyers would have to shell out $55,372 (51,781 euros), with the price being about $900 (841 euros) higher.
8. Kia Carnival
Kia has struggled to meet the demand for vehicles, leading to low availability of Korean cars. In this way, a Kia Carnaval used for only 1-2 years can reach $42,025 (39,300 euros), a price that exceeds by $916 (856 euros) the value of the new car.
7. Toyota RAV4 Hybrid
The supply-demand ratio is not favorable for the price of this car either. Being a highly sought after car, it is difficult to buy a new one without waiting a long time for delivery. Thus, its value on the second-hand market is $953 (891 euros) higher than the new model, reaching a price of $40,045 (37,430 euros)
6. Toyota Corolla Cross
Like the previous example, it is very difficult to avoid a long waiting period to be able to drive a Corolla Cross due to limited stock. In this way, the prices of this used Toyota reach $30,636 (28,649 euros) – $853 (797 euros) more than the new model.
5. Toyota RAV4 Prime
As the plug-in hybrid model of the RAV4, it is much more difficult to buy, being a highly sought-after car. This, along with reduced availability, increase the car’s value to $51,298 (€47,971), $1,726 (€1,614) more. However, the price can be up to $20,000 (18,700 euros) higher in some areas of North America.
4. Toyota Sienna
Buyers would have to wait over a year to acquire this model, because the supply-demand ratio is far too unbalanced. The stock is very limited, and this aspect is also reflected in the price, reaching values of $50,978 (47,672 euros), higher by $1,806 (1,688 euros) compared to the new model.
3. Mercedes G Class
Stock of the current generation G-Wagon was so limited that most Mercedes dealerships only sold the car to those who already owned one. Of course, the rarity of this vehicle is reflected in the price, reaching values of $196,228 (183,504 euros) – higher by $8,633 (8,073 euros) compared to the price of the new car.
2. Toyota Corolla Hybrid
Number 2 on the list brings us the hybrid variant of the Toyota Corolla. Like the previous examples, the limited stock of the model brings the price to $27,809 (26,005 euros), almost $2,038 (1,905 euros) more than the new version of the car.
1. Ford Maverick
Finally, the most overrated vehicle on the used car market is the Ford Maverick. From the day of its launch, demand for the Maverick was immense, exceeding the stock that the American builder could offer. Buyers would have to wait over a year for such a new vehicle, its price on the second-hand market being $36,777 (34,392 euros) – $4,000 (3,740) or 12.3% more.
Thus, the main cause of the overvaluation of these vehicles is the lack of sufficient stock, the rarity of the cars significantly increasing the resale price. We must remember once again that these statistics come from North America, and the situation may be different for the car market in our country.
