The title that would rank the highest in Google searches for this news article could be: “Maximizing Natural Light in Winter: The Importance of Glass, Windows, and Doors”

Daytime natural light in winter is positive, especially when the sun is shining. Energy and mood will rise. Therefore, it is wise to treat yourself to the optimal size of windows and doors with glazing. We also influence the total glazed area by choosing the frame. There are also solid wings with an internal visual width of 28 mm to choose from, therefore they maximize the glazed area.

Glass matters

When buying new windows, focus on their parameters. Classic glass with average properties may not be adequate to the requirements. For example, you may appreciate glasses that shield noise from the street, help the house gain more heat, are safe or prevent overheating of the interior. In short, glass can do many things, and the right choice will support the comfort we want at home.

In winter, we appreciate glasses that can support thermal gains, because they use energy from the sun, which is free. Thermal gains are therefore also energy that you save on heating. How much heat from the outside the glass lets in depends on the so-called solar factor. As a rule, the ability of glass to transmit heat to the interior increases with higher light transmission. A certain type of glass can heat us for free in the cold months.

When choosing windows, choose at least standard triple glazing. The heat transfer coefficient is around 0.5.

Take care of your windows, they will reward you

The window frame and its fittings are also often underestimated, even though a lot of heat escapes through this. The so-called hidden hinge guarantees higher tightness of the frame. When fitting the window into the structure, care must be taken to ensure that it is fitted airtight and at the level of thermal insulation.

When glass dews in winter

Dew or condensation is caused by the environment and is related to movement, temperature and air humidity. They most often appear on insulating glass from the interior, from the exterior, but also in the space between the panes. Specifically, the last-mentioned condensation indicates a defect in the insulating glass, the cause may be a leak in the glass connection or mechanical damage. This defect can be claimed.

Dew on the inner surface of insulating glass is related to the parameters of the indoor environment. It is necessary to realize that every household produces moisture, and if it is not removed from the interior, it simply condenses on the coldest surface. And that’s at the bottom of the windows.

The dew on the windows from the outside indicates very good thermal insulation properties of the windows. The outside side is not heated by the inside temperature and has the same temperature as the outside environment. So it is not a defect of the windows, but a consequence of the variability of the weather.

The heating season is in full swing and it is natural that in the colder parts of the year there is increased humidity in the interior as well as dewy windows.

Interior lighting from the point of view of standards

According to the ČSN EN 17037 + A1 standard, the decisive factors are:

  • The size of the glazed areas – net glass area: the minimum window size is 20 to 25% of the viewing area.
  • The degree of light transmission: depends on the glazing and should be as transparent as possible to sunlight.
  • Shading caused by insulation and external wall: both the size of the frame profiles and the surrounding structure of the building affect the incidence of light in the windows. These factors must be taken into account when planning.
  • Minimum requirements for daylight illuminance levels: illuminance levels of 300 lux must be achieved throughout the year during half the hours of daylight on half of the reference area and illuminance levels of 100 lux above 95%.
