Hacker group DarkSide has claimed responsibility for the attack on the oil pipeline of the American company Colonial Pipeline, reports The Times. Its representatives posted a message on their website, assuring that there was no geopolitics in their actions: “Our goal is to make money, not to create problems for society“.
The FBI confirmed that this organization was behind the attack on the Colonial Pipeline. It is responsible for dozens of cybercrimes in the US and Europe. Hackers follow a proven strategy. First they penetrate the IT system, then encrypt the files and demand money for the return of the key data. According to Cyberseason CEO Lior Dive, DarkSide is a new but very well organized group: “They know who the manager is, who they talk to, where the money is and who makes the decisions“.
After the cyber attack, Colonial Pipeline shut down all four of its main pipelines and is now bringing them back into service, which will not be fully done until the end of this week.
