Risk of dengue fever in the Netherlands

First of all, how do you recognize such a tiger mosquito? It is a lot smaller than the native mosquito and can be recognized by a white stripe on the back and hind legs. The creature originally comes from Southeast Asia, but it has now also settled in countries such as Spain and France. The mosquito can carry infectious diseases such as dengue fever transferring it to people – and believe us: that is no fun. Dengue fever cannot be compared to ‘normal’ fever. In fact, in addition to headaches, muscle aches and chills, you also get a huge rash on your body and face and you experience annoying nausea. And in severe forms of dengue fever you even have to be hospitalized. So we want to try to prevent this with man and power.

The dengue infection mainly occurs in countries where the tiger mosquito is common. But now that the mosquito has also been spotted in the Netherlands, the question is ‘what is the chance of dengue fever in the Netherlands?’ It RIVM indicates that the chance that the tiger mosquitoes that are now in the Netherlands and carry this disease is negligibly small. That gives hope again.

Eradicating the tiger mosquito

An NVWA expert explains: ‘The mosquitoes first have to encounter an infected person with dengue fever in order to infect someone else. If a mosquito bites the infected person and then bites someone else, a virus has a chance to spread. A large number of mosquitoes can thus lead to an outbreak of a disease. And that’s why we don’t want the mosquito here and we’re trying to eradicate it.’

They do this by working locally, at the place where the actual report comes from. Here, the NVWA takes a thorough approach by immediately removing all breeding spots, or treats them with a pesticide against larvae – so that the eggs do not survive. This tackles the problem directly at the core. Let’s hope for the best. And until then, be alert.
