In honor of the incumbent President of the International Hockey Federation (IIHF) René Fasel, a hockey exhibition took place in St. Petersburg on Thursday. In the Jubilee Sports Palace, the legends of Russia opposed the legends of world choice. Slovaks Miroslav Šatan, Ladislav Nagy and Martin Štrbák were also present in the world selection jersey.
The Jubilee Palace hosted the 2000 and 2016 Ice Hockey World Championships. Before the match, Finnish captains Jari Kurri and Vyacheslav Fetisov spoke, both of which praised Fasel’s work over the past decades in popularizing ice hockey around the world and building bridges between nations.

Famous jazz saxophonist Igor Butman then played the anthems of Russia and the IIHF, then exchanged the saxophone for a hockey stick and joined Russian legends on the ice.
Fasel appeared on cue near the post, and steered it past the goalie. Several great players from the past appeared on the ice, for example Pavel Dacjuk, Alexander Mogilny, Igor Larionov or Alexei Kasatonov in the Russian team, the teammates of Slovak hockey players were Petr Bříza, Jiří Šlégr and Esa Tikkanen, among others. The match ended in a draw 4: 4.
The election of the new IIHF President will take place on Saturday as part of a congress to be held in St. Petersburg this week. Representatives of member associations will also elect other members of the executive. Five candidates are interested in the chair after the outgoing René Fasel, who has been leading the international federation since 1994. Danish Henrik Bach Nielsen, Czech Petr Bříza, Belarus Sergej Gončarov, German Franz Reindl and Frenchman Luc Tardiff. Satan is applying for membership in the IIHF Council and may become the third Slovak member of the IIHF executive.
The first was the former head of Slovak hockey Juraj Široký, in two consecutive terms in the years 2003 to 2008, resp. 2008 to 2012. Subsequently, representatives of member associations elected another former SZĽH president Igor Nemeček to the IIHF Council. He was part of the executive body from 2012 to 2016. In May 2016, he unsuccessfully applied for re-election.
